A private museum and event space in the district of Joo Chiat where visitors can reminisce and experience the golden era of the early 1900s.
Joo Chiat – historically a cultural enclave for Peranakans in Singapore – retains its antiquated atmosphere through its shophouses, where the Straits Enclave is situated. Its main appeal, however, is its significant collection of artefacts dating back generations - in the form of heirlooms and ceremonial dresses. Visitors are encouraged to try these clothes on and will be provided with traditional games to play as well.
The Straits Enclave also serves traditional confectioneries, including the traditional kueh. The centre also functions as an arts centre and has worked with multiple agencies, including SG Rediscover and the Eurasian Heritage Centre, to showcase parts of its cultural collections.
By Appointments Only
The largest and heaviest item in the Enclave is a mid-19th century antique bed imported from an old Dutch colonial house in Indonesia by a local Peranakan family. This bed was carefully disassembled onsite, transported and brought up to the second floor through the narrow shophouse stairway before it was finally reassembled into its original state without a single scratch.
